Claiming prizes

Here's the process for claiming District of Columbia Lottery prizes.

In-person claims of $5,000 or more require an appointment. Call (202) 645-8000 to schedule your appointment.

To claim a prize by mail, send the signed winning ticket, a completed claim form, a copy of your Social Security card, and a copy of your ID to:

The DC Lottery withholds a percentage of certain lottery winnings for federal and state taxes.

About the District of Columbia Lottery

The DC Lottery was launched in 1982. and it made $3.5 million in tickets during its first week. The first game was called Match 3, and all 10 million tickets sold out in a few days. The DC Lottery is one of the founding members of the Multi-State Lottery. In 1987, the group launched Lotto America (now Powerball). The District of Columbia then added Mega Millions draws in 2010.

Since its inception, the DC Lottery has contributed to the district's general fund, which provides for numerous city services, including education, parks, and housing. In the District of Columbia, players must be 18 or older to purchase lottery tickets, but minors may receive lottery tickets and claim prizes if the ticket is a gift.

Yes. You can buy tickets in advance for all the lottery games available in the District of Columbia. Check out our Advanced Draws for further details.

Prizes of up to $600 can be claimed at any DC Lottery office or prize center. Prizes of over $600 up to $5,000 can be claimed at the Office of Lottery and Gaming Prize Center or any Retailer Plus location.

Prizes of over $5,000 can only be claimed at the Office of Lottery and Gaming Prize Center or by mailing a signed ticket to the center. All prizes can be claimed by mail using this method.

Before claiming any large lottery prize, we recommend that you consult with a lawyer or financial advisor as they can help you with the claim process.

Lottery winnings in the District of Columbia may be subject to local and federal income taxes. Winnings over $600 are reported to the IRS.

The DC Lottery also withholds taxes for certain prizes. See our Tax Information section for more details.

The DC Lottery is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen tickets. Keep tickets in a safe place. Signing your ticket helps prove you own it in case you lose it.

In the District of Columbia, you can purchase tickets at authorized lottery retailers, or play DC-3, DC-4, DC-5, Lucky for Life, Powerball, and Mega Millions online.

The majority of the funds transferred to the district's general fund, which supports essential services including education, recreation and parks, public safety, housing, and senior and child services. Some of the funds also go to cover lottery administrative and operational expenses.
